The Green Heart Between the Sea and the Sibillini Mountains
An exciting trail through ancient beech trees, breathtaking views, and paths winding through one of Valdaso’s most authentic natural areas. A protected oasis where visitors can enjoy slow-paced experiences amid nature, silence, and postcard-perfect landscapes.
The Forest of Montefalcone Appennino and Smerillo
Between the perched villages of Montefalcone Appennino and Smerillo, one of the most fascinating green lungs of the Marche hinterland unfolds: a vast wooded cloak that wraps the rock, caresses the slopes and holds unexpected glimpses between the Adriatic Sea and the Sibillini Mountains.
Here, time slows down. The paths wind through oak, maple, hornbeam and ancient beech trees -including the imposing Monumental Beech, reachable by a short walk immersed in the forest’s silence. In spring, the undergrowth blooms with snowdrops, cyclamens and wild orchids, while in autumn the foliage transforms into a palette of reds and golds, making the forest a perfect destination for photo treks and nature hikes.
The trail that connects Smerillo to Montefalcone Appennino is one of the most picturesque: it leads through sandstone cliffs, natural scenic balconies and viewpoints from which the gaze sweeps from the Apennine ridge to the blue line of the sea. With a little luck you may spot buzzards, owls, foxes and small wild mammals that inhabit this protected oasis.
The Smerillo Forest is recognized as a Protected Floristic Area, and is an ideal place for those seeking slow-paced experiences, outdoor excursions, moments of reflection and direct contact with nature. An itinerary to be experienced at a slow pace, breathing in the scent of wood, listening to the rustling of leaves and being guided by the true sounds of the mountains.
