The first historical records, of Farfense origin, date back to 1343. The name is of Latin origin: the noun in Penne derives from pinnae, which recalls the idea of a building perched on the rock. The original church, unlike the present one, had only a single nave and lacked both an apse and two side chapels. The latter were added only in the 17th century, during a restoration that also involved changing the church’s name to Sant’Angelo. With a second restoration, which took place between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, returned the church to its original dedication to St. Peter in Penne.
